- <p> DIED. LIONEL STANDER, 86, character actor; in Los Angeles. With
- his gravelly voice and definitive New York accent, Stander was
- a natural as the cold-blooded press agent in A Star Is Born
- (1937). He built a career playing such hard-edged urbanites,
- as well as comic eccentrics in films like Unfaithfully Yours
- (1948). But his twilight turn on TV's Hart to Hart (1979-84)
- as the jovial, bear-like chauffeur Max eclipsed the career that
- preceded it--including 14 years blacklisted by Hollywood during
- the McCarthy era.
