  15. <p>     DIED. LIONEL STANDER, 86, character actor; in Los Angeles. With
  16. his gravelly voice and definitive New York accent, Stander was
  17. a natural as the cold-blooded press agent in A Star Is Born
  18. (1937). He built a career playing such hard-edged urbanites,
  19. as well as comic eccentrics in films like Unfaithfully Yours
  20. (1948). But his twilight turn on TV's Hart to Hart (1979-84)
  21. as the jovial, bear-like chauffeur Max eclipsed the career that
  22. preceded it--including 14 years blacklisted by Hollywood during
  23. the McCarthy era.
